Enrolments open for 2027: is Y Community School right for your young person?

Oct 13, 2026 | Youth | Education, Secondary School, Y Community School, 2027 Enrolment

If you're looking into alternative school enrolment in Victoria for 2027, you're probably weighing up options for a young person who hasn't settled into mainstream schooling, or who has disengaged from education altogether. Y Community School, based in Epping, is now taking enrolments for the 2027 school year.

Y Community School is a flexible, trauma-informed secondary school for young people who have disengaged, or are at risk of disengaging, from mainstream education. It offers pathways through the Victorian Pathways Certificate (VPC) and the VCE Vocational Major (VCE VM), rather than the standard VCE study design.

This post covers who the school is for, what the intake process looks like, and how to take the first step.

Who is Y Community School for?

Y Community School is designed for young people who have found it difficult to engage with, or stay engaged in, a mainstream secondary school setting. This might include students who have disengaged from education for a period of time, or who are at risk of disengaging.

The school takes a trauma-informed approach. This means recognising that past difficult experiences can affect a young person's learning, behaviour and relationships, and responding with safety, trust, choice and collaboration rather than relying only on discipline.

Every student's situation is different, so the right fit is worked out individually with the student and family, not assumed from a checklist alone.

What pathways are available

Students at Y Community School work towards one of two qualifications:

VCE Vocational Major (VCE VM)

A vocational program within the Victorian Certificate of Education for Year 11 and 12 students. It uses hands-on, applied learning and school-based assessment rather than external exams, and does not contribute to an ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank), though non-ATAR pathways to university remain open. VCE VM combines four compulsory studies, Literacy, Numeracy, Work Related Skills and Personal Development Skills, with Vocational Education and Training (VET) at Certificate II level or above.

Victorian Pathways Certificate (VPC)

A more accessible secondary qualification for students who are not yet ready for VCE or VCE VM. It covers literacy, numeracy, work-related skills and personal development, with flexibility to include VET, and is recommended in partnership with the student and family based on individual need, rather than offered to everyone.

You can read more about how these pathways work on our Curriculum & Learning page.

How the 2027 intake process works

In general terms, families interested in enrolling can expect to make an initial enquiry, discuss their young person's situation with the school, and go through an enrolment conversation to understand whether Y Community School is the right setting. Specific eligibility criteria required documents and intake dates for 2027 will be confirmed directly with families during this process.

We recommend starting the conversation early in Term 4, since places for the following year can fill as demand grows.

What to bring to an enrolment conversation

Having a general sense of your young person's recent schooling history, any current supports in place, and what you're hoping a new setting will offer will help make the first conversation productive.

Visiting our Epping campus

Y Community School operates from the Whittlesea campus in Epping. Families are welcome to find out more about the site and what a typical day looks like on our Epping campuses page before enrolling.

Frequently asked questions

Is Y Community School only for students who have already left mainstream school?

No. It supports young people who have disengaged from mainstream schooling as well as those at risk of disengaging. Every situation is considered individually.

Will my child do VCE VM or the VPC?

This depends on the individual student. VPC is recommended where a student is not yet ready for VCE VM, in partnership with the student, family and school.

Can a student still go to university from this pathway?

VCE VM does not contribute to an ATAR, but non-ATAR pathways to university remain available, alongside apprenticeships, traineeships, further training or direct employment.
